$30+ bucks is a lot to spend on a light bulb.

I purchased this on a whim as an experiment.
I replaced a 13watt CFL in my kitchen with this bulb.

I have 2 pairs of pendant lights in my kitchen/dining room which have CFLs in them.

I replaced the cfl above my island with this bulb to see how it compares. I do not have a light meter so my observations are highly subjective.

First impressions, as bright if not a little brighter than the CFL it replaced. Its been about a week and I am still a little startled by the fact that there is no warm-up period. I have gotten used to waiting for the brightness to come with the CFLs so it is still a little surprising when I hit the switch and BAM! light.

This bulb is more of a spotlight than the CFL it replaced so while the room "feels" a little darker because there is less spill upwards and to the sides than with the CFL, the actual space illuminated (ie the kitchen workspace) is the same.

This is particularly nice because my kitchen connects to the home theater and less light bleed makes for less ambient light for the projector to deal with.

Color reproduction seems good, usable light is definitely good.

The only negative that I have observed at all is there is a slight "strobe" effect. Not a 60hz strobe but something maybe a little high around 80-100 hz that I believe is an artifact of the driver circuitry.

All in all I would give it 3.5 out of 5 stars with my reservations being over price and the somewhat tight dispersion angle which limits the utility of the bulb (ie probably would not do too well as a table lamp) (Posted on 12/17/2010)
